Irony is the enemy of the post-modern left(tm)
This blog is my “safety valve” and I post here to blow off steam (thanks to the guys who named their blog that). As has been stated before, I don’t particularly care to argue policy wonkery here but apparently I need to periodically mention that. If you want to talk to evil right wingers who enjoy bacon and vodka, they’d seriously love to have you at Ace’s (the usual Democrats that post there are frankly pathetic).
I’ll be on vacation for the next week or so, so posting will not exist or be intermittent at best during that time. Posts will resume 8/31.
Links posted today to Instapundit are not currently working. It’s their fault, not mine. (The front page does work and you can probably pick off which stories go with which posts here).
Since people can’t behave, the comment moderation is going to be quite a bit stricter.
Here’s the basis for discussion of our next President: he’s a career politican who’s nearly every move since the age of 17 has been aimed towards the acquisition of political power. This is stated very clearly in DREAMS FROM MY FATHER. Because he works only for himself (as did Bill Clinton), he’ll sometimes do the right thing, even if not for perfectly correct reasons (e.g. Bill passing NAFTA). Just don’t mistake anything he does for more than that.
I’m on vacation for the next week or so. Posting will not happen every day and not in the usual volume. Seeya on the flipside.
I pay for this site as a mental safety valve, and recent commenting has been severely damaging that mechanism. Comments are no longer safe from random editing or deletion and I reserve the right to make fun of the Communist Messiah, Barack H. Obama, in any way I wish. Even if it’s “unfair”. Life is unfair.
We’re almost all set. I’ve even fixed up links inside old comments so posts with pictures and posts that link to other posts should work. The sidebar’s missing graphics at the moment, we’ll fix that ASAP.
Please update your bookmarks and email clients: www.ioterran.com is this shiny new site, and terran [at] ioterran.com is the new contact address.
This new design isn’t finalized yet, but it’s close enough for jazz. New features include Gravatar support – if you have one and you leave a comment, it’ll appear next to your comment. If you don’t, you get a generic “G” icon. More cool stuff coming up… (And if IoT looks like it has for the last 5 years, please click “Reload”).
(The savvy may notice the basis of the new look is the free Illacrimo template by Design Disease – big props to them for creating it and letting it be used freely! IoT specific coding and graphical elements are by Zeitgeist.)
Zeitgeist and I are working on reskinning the site. You may see flashes of the new design (it’s even more blue than the current one) on and off while we test stuff out on the production server – do not panic
We’re also switching anti-spam tools to the popular Akismet, which hopefully won’t auto-blacklist first time commenters like the previous plugin we were using.
Here’s a very special open letter to socialists.
I’ll be out of town so there may
or may not be posts Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Hopefully they’ll be slow news days anyway.
Yeah, I know, but 3 guys I don’t get to see much were in Tampa last night.
Zeitgeist upgraded us to WordPress 2.1.1 and then left the country just as an alert came out that nobody should install 2.1.1 lest you get hacked from here to the moon. I’ve now successfully upgraded to 2.1.2 which fixes all the issues, and anyone else running a WordPress 2.1.x blog is advised to upgrade as well in case the alarming messages on your Dashboard page weren’t enough motivation.
Checking through what the spam filter rejected over the last few days there was an authentic Bush-bashing comment, except it was attached to a Day By Day link that had nothing to do with what it was talking about and the URL in it was trying to sell Viagra and crap like that.
We’ll be out of town the rest of the week for the US Thanksgiving holiday. See you on Monday, Nov. 27th for full service free ice cream!
I’m back from my vacation (hey, I only posted once on it!) and we’ll get this thing going again tomorrow morning.
BTW, I came home to the HORRIBLE DEVESTATION caused in Orlando by Tropical Yawn Ernesto (apologies to folks in the Carolinas for whom it’s a serious thing). I mean, power was never lost (which here normally happens about twice a week for a few seconds even without special weather) or anything.
PS: FEMA delivers? Sweet!
It’s summer vacation season once again, and this means posting will be intermittant to non-existant starting tomorrow. Regular posting will resume Friday, September 1.
While I’m gone, enjoy Jeff Goldstein’s vlog debut.
The music lister breaks Internet Exploder (because, really, what doesn’t?). I’ll figure out something later.
We’re now running the latest WordPress update, which fixes several security flaws of the type that caused Aaron to get repeatedly hacked. Additionally, I’m now allowing my music player to tell the last.fm service what tracks I’m listening to so it can display them at the top of the left sidebar. You can click a track’s name to find out more about it, and if it appears with a green circle icon before the name you can click that to hear a little bit of it. Don’t read too much into the choices – most of the time I have it set on “shuffle” since I’m at the point where choosing is too much work (but at the same time nothing I hate’s likely to come up). Oh, and the timestamps shown are UTC (european) time despite my best efforts. I’m really not up that late
The first time you post a comment on this site, it’ll normally be held for approval. I check the approval queue usually once a day, and unless you’re linking to certain well-known drugs I generally approve it (even if you disagree with me). After that you’re normally home free, although spam filter technology being what it is you might get held up for moderation if you post something it doesn’t like (e.g. a comment with multiple links will often trip it).
Our server broke and got swapped out for a brand-new one that’s also much faster, but the aftershocks aren’t over yet so I won’t post much today. Do enjoy this awesome Mark Steyn piece though.
IoT is now running the new WordPress 2.0, same as the Rottie. Let me know if anything breaks.
I’ve taken a
partial trip through the links and fixed ones that needed fixing and deleted ones that go to now-dead places. I also added a batch of blogs I noticed were linking us that looked interesting.
Updated: Everything under “the chef recommends” now goes to a valid location that’s had an update within the last month.
This post contains things that are here or coming soon that you should know about and an update on the storm troubles in the MidWest — those wacky hurricanes are stealing all the news coverage!
We had multiple hard disks fail in the RAID array powering our server yesterday. TCH was able to replace the drives and restore from an overnight backup tape, so any comments done while the drives were failing may be lost. Everything should be back to normal now however.
