“Clerks II”: It’s actually two different movies. The “Clerks II” part (roughly the first 40 minutes) miscalculates what made the original great on a scale not seen since Men in Black II. The other part, which I’ll call “Chasing Jersey Girl”, works much better and demonstrates that Kevin actually *has* grown up. Rosario Dawson is just adorable, and both Ben Affleck and Jason Lee have amusing cameos (Lee, unable to remove his My Name Is Earl facial hair on penalty of death, is a 3rd character rather than Brodie or Banky). But as usual the real star is Jason Mewes, who has a startling new power in his voice now that he’s sobered up. It’s unfortunate he has so few lines, although it’s a nice switch-up when he comes up with the key insight rather than Silent Bob.
