This was a meme pushed hard by US elites on the basis that the central planning practiced by a Japanese government agency called MITI (Ministry of International Trade and Industry) was far superior to messy old capitalism. Back in the real world, MITI committed a series of spectacular screwups starting in the mid-80s that led to it being shut down in 2001.
