Inoperable Terran

Irony is the enemy of the post-modern left(tm)

Closing time

Gentrification of New York’s Bowery district means the legendary music club CBGB’s is having to relocate (to Las Vegas) after 33 years. Fittingly, one of the biggest stars to get their break there played one of the final shows: Deborah Harry, aka “Blondie”.

A Fox Sports baseball announcer was fired for cracking some Hispanic jokes about his broadcast partner, Yankees great Lou Piniella. (Piniella was most recently manager of the Devil Rays and is rumored to be wanted by the Tribune Co. as the next Cubs manager).

    A great interview. The pullquote:

  • A smart move from GM?

Step 1: bring in the great-looking rear-drive Holden Commodore from GM Australia
Step 2: sell it as the new Pontiac Grand Prix, replacing 2 decades of crappy straight-to-rental rebadged Chevys
    Step 3: Profit

(Yes, I know they already tried this and failed with the Holden Monaro => Pontiac GTO, but the styling offended retro-purists, kids had no idea what a GTO was, and the marketing sucked. This time they should have a lot fewer such disadvantages).

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak’s old house is for sale. 6 bathrooms, 7 1/2 bathrooms. And of course some features no other house will ever have.

Kyoto is a total failure, but of course supporters blame Bush even though he’s not the one that caused all the signatories to blow past their “carbon targets”.

  • Spam and eggs

We’re under unusually heavy spam attack lately. I’ve managed to keep most of it from appearing in comments or on the main page, but stricter measures are necessary. Starting tomorrow, you will have to sign up to comment, similar to on e.g. Misha and many other blogs. It will be totally free and simply a way to help the software differentiate regulars using “forbidden” words (casino, poker, etc) from actual spambots. More details when the signup happens.
