  • Saddam Captured: The Tyrant in Custody!

Would’ve posted sooner, but I’ve been glued to the TV. Saddam was found holed up (literally in a hole in the ground) just outside of Tikrit! Apparently he was 6-8 feet underground in a camouflaged “spider hole” with a vent and fan. He was captured at approximately 8:30pm local time Saturday evening courtesy of ~600 U.S. soldiers. Looking quite a bit the worse for wear he was taken into custody where DNA tests proved his identity. Celebration ensued in the streets of Baghdad and elsewhere, including much dancing and singing and the customary firing of the AK-47s into the air. This in contrast to the capture, during which not a single shot was fired. Reports are that today is being officially declared Iraqi Independence Day. Congratulations, folks!

  • The inside story of a love affair

I’m a day late for BlogCuba, but here’s something appropriate anyway. For years, the big mystery of Cuba is how a parade of celebrity leftists can actually go there and think Castro’s some kind of management genius. Our top-secret spy cockatiels have gotten us tapes of some of these visits, and we’ve discovered the truth: it’s not just the clever fascade. It’s the interpreter. Read on for the sordid details.

Val has a ton of awesome posts up for BlogCuba, in which people who actually can write let loose about the island that made Florida what it is. I couldn’t cough up anything worthwhile by the deadline (there’s a reason this isn’t a Whittle-style essay blog), but I’ll post something when it’s done.

  • Non-haiku haiku contest

Michele’s having a contest for haikus about the Atari 2600. Except that, as TMQ readers know, a “haiku” is a 5-7-5 poem that alludes to nature. A generic 5-7-5 is a “senryu”. Nothing like being pedantic on a Friday ;-)

  • It’s funny how things work with the media. Thousands of Iraqis protest for Bush and against terror: no coverage in the major dailies. A dozen or so protest against Bush: front-page news.
